At the Urban Outfitters HQ today, a mass panic broke out among employees. How will they ever fit into their skinny Levis and vintage tees with soon-to-be-neighbor Tasty Baking Company relocating from Nicetown to 35,000 square-feet of offices and 345,000 square-feet of production in the Navy Yard? According to an article in today's Philadelphia Business Journal, the sparkly new facility is in a Keystone Opportunity Zone that exempts city and state taxes until 2018. We figure this comes out of our taxpaying pocket somewhere, but who are we to complain. Tastykake is a Philly icon, like the Liberty Bell or political corruption. We pay for those things, so really why should this be any different? No word on whether the plant, which will be operational by 2010, will run tours or serve fresh-from-the-oven Juniors and Krimpets. One can only hope.
