Coffee Talk

At the risk of Blogalicious becoming the definitive East Passyunk Ave crier, we've got more scoop from the homefront. Black N Brew opened Saturday. The sunny breakfast-and-lunch cafe is fitted with hardwood floors, big windows, WiFi, a nifty blackboard menu, bakery case, and glass-topped tables that will showcase the works of local artists on the regular. Toasty and deep La Colombe espresso was the match for the powder outside. A simple spring mix salad with tangy goat cheese, meaty walnuts, and the sugary pop of purple grapes is the answer to the prayers of people like me pining away for a downtown place with great, lunchtime salads. Will be back for the breakfast burrito (already has the thumbs-up from STYLE editor, Joy Manning) and Black N Brew Cakes drizzled with butterscotch syrup. With E's starting food in Feb and Benna's v. 2.0 opening close by, one Philly Blogger reports:

"Can't wait for Benna's II to open up and for E's, Black 'n' Brew and Benna's to rumble on Passyunk Ave. Or maybe play intramural sports against each other or something."

Another restaurant is opening on the Avenue. You heard it here first: At 1600 South 11th Street in a Stuccoed building newly rehabbed with columned portico, French doors, and arched windows, expect Chiarella's Ristorante, an upscale Italian with views of the fountain. You might recognize the name from the Wildwood bistro or from the now-closed pizzeria on 17th & Shunk. Same family. A peek inside the multi-paned windows show a polished bar and two dining rooms swathed in warm earth tones. Tables and chairs are already in place, ready to be laid with table cloths and maybe some of the gourmet pizzas for which the Wildwood Chiarella's is known.

Tre Scalini should be in their new space by Thursday, the 25th, according to a sign in the old window. Whole Foods, we're waiting.

It's about time we get some great places to grab lunch in South Philly. So overdue. Thanks Adam for keeping us updated!
